Junior Johnson’s mark on American motorsports went far beyond just stats and numbers and honors. To be sure, they were impressive. Impressive enough to put him in the NASCAR Hall of Fame on the first ballot for the inaugural Class of 2010. But they were only part of the legacy of Robert Glenn Johnson Jr., who died Friday at 88 in a hospice facility near Charlotte, North Carolina. As a driver during parts of the 1953-1966 seasons, he won 50 Cup Series races in a career that was interrupted for almost a year while he did prison time for making and running moonshine. As an owner during parts of the 1965-1995 seasons, he built and directed teams that won 132 races for some of NASCAR’s greatest drivers.
