Jenkins Competition 600hp ZL-1

While we were moving the offices to our new digs in El Segundo, California, this classic photo surfaced from a lost file that is an outtake from a June ’69 Car Craft cover, proclaiming “Grump’s Aluminum 427-Bill Jenkins Preps Chevy’s ZL-1 Camaro for Stocker Bashes.” Feature Editor Terry Cook announced, “Here come de aluminum Grump! Bill Jenkins has been floggin’ the ZL-1 Chevy for two weeks now and has managed to run 10.09-138.48 in his single, four-barrel, 2,830-pound Camaro with a stock parts motor! No doubt by this time he’s on the heavy side of 140 and cutting a swath into the nines.” The story goes on to detail many of Jenkins’ masterful engine-building techniques for the 600hp all-aluminum big-block. This was high-tech stuff for CC’s drag race readership in 1969 and a great look back for us a couple of months short of 41 years later. Source >
