The Full Story Behind Chevy’s 454 Big Block V8

The 454 originated in 1970, a versatile engine that would be used in automotive and marine applications. This engine was used in many of Chevrolet’s flagship models, including the Chevelle, Monte Carlo, and Corvette. It was the workhorse that powered certain Chevy C/K trucks and coupe-pickup hybrids, namely the GMC Sprint and El Camino.

Chevrolet big block engines are widely known and appreciated for their reliability and power. The original arose in the form of the 396ci L78 engine, which made 425 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. This engine debuted in 1965, and sparked a long-time tradition of Chevy big-block engines.
