While Nirvana continued promoting their recent studio album “In Utero”, it was their turn to perform on Halloween night 1993 at the University of Akron (Ohio). But this time the band would come out on stage in a peculiar way: Kurt came out on stage completely covered in a purple Barney costume, at that time the children’s series was at its peak. He also carried a bottle of Jack Daniel’s, which he poured every so often into the enormous mouth of the dinosaur’s head. Pat Smear was dressed as Slash from Guns N’ Roses and, in keeping with Nirvana’s rock parody tradition, at one point “Slash” and “Barney” had a guitar duel. Dave was dressed as a mummy (photos that are still unpublished) and Krist had his face painted white with the letters PC (politically correct) written on his forehead, in reference to a recent dispute in which Ted Danson had been involved, then Whoopi Goldberg’s boyfriend, for having painted his face black.
