On August 1, 1981, MTV began its American broadcast; the first music video aired on the new cable TV network was “Video Killed the Radio Star,” by The Buggles, and for a good twenty years, we had nearly 24 hours of music videos at our fingertips. By the early 2000s, the network was increasingly adding other content, and in February 2010, MTV would drop the “Music Television” branding. The network would still air video premieres on occasion, through both television and real-time interaction with artists and celebrities on its website, but they became known more for their reality shows than music videos and ended up losing their relevance.
