Long before we got purpose-built BMX bikes, we ran what we had. We pulled the fenders and reflectors off, spraypainted them, and launched with reckless abandon off of homemade jumps. We all eventually managed to get proper BMX bikes – some got ultralight chromoly rides from the bike shop, others off-brand tanks from the autoparts store, while others yet had to piece something together. Whatever the case, we all ended up riding together and tore up the local track with the local pros, which meant we were pro as well, or at least that’s how it felt to us.
