Scooby-Doo Mystery in Persia

Did you know there’s a 1973 episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies that completely broke all the franchise rules? If you remember watching “Mystery in Persia” (also known as “Scooby-Doo Meets Jeannie”), you actually witnessed a massive piece of pop culture and animation history! Here is why this specific episode was full of crazy “firsts” for Mystery Inc.

A Snapshot in Time: Early in the episode, Velma explicitly points out that Persia is now known as Iran. Because this aired in September 1973, it stands as a unique historical time capsule filmed six years before the 1979 Iranian Revolution.✈️ First Time Abroad: Before this episode, Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby had only solved mysteries inside the territorial United States. This trip to the Middle East marked their very first official international adventure!

The Monsters Were REAL: We all love the classic formula where the ghost is just a grumpy museum curator in a rubber mask. But this episode completely broke the mold. By crossing over with Hanna-Barbera’s Jeannie cartoon (a spin-off of I Dream of Jeannie), the gang encountered actual, real-life magic and evil djinn.

No masks here! A Young Jedi Appears: Look closely at Corey Anders—the guy in the red helmet standing next to Shaggy. He was voiced by none other than a young, pre-Star Wars Mark Hamill. This was Hamill’s absolute first voice-acting gig in the Scooby-Doo universe. H/T>
