While Knight Rider featured its share of criminals, spies, and corrupt businessmen, no villain left a bigger impression than Garthe Knight. Introduced in the 1983 two-part episode “Goliath,” Garthe was the estranged son of billionaire Wilton Knight, the founder of the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). Portrayed by David Hasselhoff in a dual role, Garthe served as the evil counterpart to series hero Michael Knight, creating one of television’s most memorable hero-versus-villain rivalries.
Unlike Michael Knight, who dedicated his life to fighting crime alongside the advanced supercar KITT, Garthe was ruthless, arrogant, and consumed by a desire for power and revenge. After years of imprisonment in Africa for criminal activities, Garthe escaped and returned to the United States determined to seize control of his father’s fortune and destroy everything associated with FLAG.
To combat Michael and KITT, Garthe commissioned the creation of Goliath, a massive tractor-trailer equipped with advanced technology and armored with the same near-indestructible molecular-bonded shell that protected KITT. The sight of the gigantic black truck battling KITT became one of the most iconic moments in the series. The confrontation culminated in a spectacular showdown that pushed both vehicles to their limits and established Garthe as Michael Knight’s greatest enemy.
The character proved so popular that he returned in the fourth-season episode “Goliath Returns.” Once again, Garthe sought revenge, rebuilding his powerful truck and attempting to destroy Michael and FLAG. Although his plans ultimately failed, his return reinforced his status as the show’s signature villain.
Part of Garthe Knight’s appeal came from the unique casting choice. David Hasselhoff’s portrayal of both hero and villain allowed audiences to see a dark reflection of Michael Knight. While Michael embodied justice, compassion, and self-control, Garthe represented greed, vengeance, and unchecked ambition. The contrast between the two characters gave their confrontations an emotional weight rarely seen in action television of the era.
More than four decades after Knight Rider first aired, Garthe Knight remains one of the most memorable television villains of the 1980s. His larger-than-life schemes, personal connection to Michael Knight, and the unforgettable battles between KITT and Goliath helped create some of the series’ most beloved episodes. For many fans, no other adversary came close to matching the threat—or the sheer entertainment value—of Garthe Knight.
