Rat Rod Life

July 24, 2026

Rat rods are a rebellious offshoot of traditional hot rods, built to celebrate raw creativity rather than polished perfection. Instead of gleaming paint and flawless chrome, rat rods embrace rust, primer, exposed metal, welded patches, and a deliberately weathered appearance. Most are assembled from a mix of vintage American cars and trucks from the 1920s through the 1950s, powered by everything from classic flathead V8s and big-block Chevrolets to diesel engines or unconventional powerplants. Every rat rod is unique, reflecting its builder’s imagination and mechanical ingenuity. Emerging as a movement in the 1990s as a reaction against increasingly expensive, show-quality street rods, rat rods recaptured the do-it-yourself spirit that defined early hot rodding. Today, they’re celebrated at cruise nights and car shows for their gritty aesthetics, handcrafted details, and unapologetic attitude.
