Sid and Nancy

September 4, 2026

This intimate photograph of the iconic punk rock couple Sid and Nancy (Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen), the bassist for the English punk band the Sex Pistols, was captured by an unnamed photographer in New York City in late 1978 and made its way into several music zines of the era. The raw image highlights their turbulent, co-dependent relationship, which came to a tragic end just months later. As seen in the page clipping printed in the upper right corner, a caption darkly foreshadowed their imminent deaths, stating: “You could tell both these guys were gonna be in the grave by Christmas.” Spungen was found stabbed to death at the Hotel Chelsea in October 1978, and Vicious died of a heroin overdose in February 1979.
