Wendy Carlos’ Custom Moog Synthesizer

Wendy Carlos used a custom-built Moog Modular synthesizer based on the Moog IIIc system to record her landmark 1968 Grammy-winning album, Switched-On Bach. Carlos met Bob Moog in 1964 and provided crucial feedback that shaped early commercial modular units, including convincing Moog to add a touch-sensitive (velocity-sensitive) volume control and custom keyboard design, which allowed her to play with realistic musical expression and dynamic phrasing rather than static electronic tones. Her system included specialized envelope generators and filters built to her precise specifications to achieve distinct timbres for emulating classical orchestral instruments note-by-note.
