“In 1989, I moved to Los Angeles. I started taking photos for bands I knew there: Redd Kross, L7, Hole, The Nymphs, and The Muffs. They were all just starting their careers and needed photos. I was studying photography and needed practice. So I got experience, and they got photos. I took a lot of photos for Hole, and when it was time to release their first album, Courtney wanted something bright and unusual. I was experimenting with color infrared film. It’s a medical film used to take images of skin and eyes. Veins show through under the skin! So with it, you can get either very beautiful images or terrible, strange photographic things. Exposure is key, so Courtney and I did several test shoots. She liked everything, and then we shot the photos for the album cover of ‘Pretty on the Inside.’ The colors you see on that cover are exactly as they are on the film.
