The jukebox glows in the corner of the dive bar like something that hasn’t slept in forty years. Red and blue tubes hum behind scratched glass while a tired song crawls out of the speakers, warped slightly by age and cigarette smoke. Nobody remembers who put it on. Maybe the old man at the end of the bar. Maybe nobody. Outside, rain shines beneath the neon beer sign, and somewhere beyond the parking lot a freight train groans through the darkness. The record changes with a mechanical click. For three seconds there is silence, and everyone in the room seems to notice it at once. Then the jukebox begins playing another sad song about a woman who left a long time ago.
