Seattle: The Nation’s Most Beautiful City

The promotional phrase “Seattle: The Nation’s Most Beautiful City” was a prominent slogan used to market the city leading up to its 1962 World’s Fair, officially known as the Century 21 Exposition. Running from April 21 to October 21, 1962, the fair used this civic pride campaign to transition Seattle’s public image from a remote frontier town into a sophisticated, forward-thinking metropolis. This vintage postcard from 1961 features an architectural model showing the Century 21 Exposition grounds ahead of the actual event’s opening. When the fair closed, the 74-acre site was not torn down. It was permanently converted into the Seattle Center, which remains a major cultural hub hosting the Pacific Science Center, Climate Pledge Arena, and the Museum of Pop Culture.
