The first time a Ford Mustang was seen on TV was in an episode of Hazel, an early comedy show that followed the misadventures of the Baxter family and their live-in maid, Hazel Burke. The episode was titled “Let’s Get Away From It All” and it aired on April 16, 1964, the day after Ford introduced the Mustang to the public at the New York World’s Fair.
At the beginning of this episode, we see Hazel, George, Dorothy, and Harold getting into their new red Ford Mustang coupe and going out to dinner. This is followed by a special opening credit sequence showing Hazel driving the Mustang out of the driveway, which aired only in this episode. This was a special promotion by Ford, who was a longtime sponsor of the show and supplied most of the on-screen cars used in the show during it’s run from 1961 through 1966 and subsequent seasons saw a red ’65 convertible join the family.
