It takes strength to be gentle and kind

“It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate. It takes strength to be gentle and kind. Over, over, over, over. It’s so easy to laugh, it’s so easy to hate. It takes guts to be gentle and kind. Over, over…” Those are lyrics from the bridge of The Smiths‘ ‘I Know It’s Over’ which is a ballad for the desperate and lonely. It uses basic allusions to the idea of loneliness producing despair, but the attention to the speaker’s ego, and how it leads to his demise, creates an original take on heartbreak through the mind of Morrissey.
