Introduced in 1965, the Bultaco Sherpa S was one of the motorcycles that helped establish the Spanish manufacturer as a major force in the lightweight performance motorcycle market. Unlike Bultaco’s pure competition machines, the Sherpa S was designed as a dual-purpose scrambler that was equally comfortable on the street or on dirt trails. Powered by a lively air-cooled, piston-port two-stroke single available in 100cc, 125cc, 175cc, and 250cc versions, the Sherpa S combined quick acceleration with remarkably light weight, making it an exciting ride for both beginners and experienced riders. Its slim fuel tank, upswept exhaust, long-travel suspension, and high-mounted fenders gave it a purposeful off-road appearance while remaining fully street legal.
The Sherpa S became especially popular in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s, where riders embraced its simplicity, agility, and rugged reliability. Its responsive engine and nimble handling made it a favorite for trail riding, amateur scrambles, and the emerging wheelie and stunt scene, while its straightforward mechanical design made maintenance easy. Although it was eventually overshadowed by more specialized motocross and enduro machines, the Sherpa S remains one of Bultaco’s most iconic models. Today, enthusiasts value the bike for its distinctive Spanish styling, spirited two-stroke performance, and its important role in introducing a generation of riders to off-road motorcycling.
