A beloved amusement park located along the shores of Chippewa Lake in Medina County, Ohio, Chippewa Lake Park entertained generations of visitors from 1878 to 1978. Originally established as a lakeside picnic and recreation area, the park grew into one of northeastern Ohio’s favorite summertime destinations, featuring wooden roller coasters, a Ferris wheel, a carousel, Tumble Bug, a swimming beach, boat rides, and a lively midway. Its famous ballroom hosted legendary big bands and entertainers, making the park as popular with adults as it was with children. For decades, Chippewa Lake Park was a favorite destination for family outings, company picnics, and summer vacations, earning the nickname “Ohio’s Family Playground.” Unfortunately, declining attendance and competition from larger amusement parks led to its closure in 1978, exactly 100 years after opening. Rather than being immediately demolished, much of the park was left abandoned, its rusting rides and crumbling structures slowly disappearing beneath decades of overgrown vegetation, creating an eerie time capsule of a bygone era of American amusement parks that can still be seen today.
