Madonna on the edge of fame in 1983

Madonna’s early days (late 1970s–early 1980s) began with her moving to New York City in 1978 with only $35, abandoning a dance scholarship at the University of Michigan to pursue a career in dance. She lived in poverty in the East Village, working odd jobs like nude art modeling and as a hat check girl at the Russian Tea Room, before transitioning into the NYC club music scene and releasing her debut album in 1983. The rest, as they say, is history.
