200 Motels

Kristin DeBell (Sitting on a TV set) is from an archive of a shoot by Helmut Newton published in Playboy in 1976. The piece was called ‘200 Motels, or, how I spent my summer vacation,’ and was based on a fictional Florida road trip from Key Largo to Key West, with Newton photographing actress and model DeBell as the sole subject of the pictorial. Newton did not keep the negatives and made no further prints, though in 2002 he made greatly enlarged facsimiles of the published pages that were shown in his exhibition ‘Yellow Press.’ Vintage gelatin silver prints originating from the archive of this specific shoot have fetched high prices at major auction houses, such as $21,075 at Bonhams in 2002 and $26,290 at Christie’s in 2003.
